Italians are known for a variety of great foods. Pizza and pasta are probably the most well-known, but don’t discount Italian desserts.
For example, gelato the Italian word for ice cream, is made with milk, cream, various sugars, and flavoring, including fresh fruit and nut purees. Gelato has a luscious consistency and a real purity of flavor. Torrone Semifreddo is an Italian frozen mousse or nougat made with honey, egg whites, sugar and nuts. It’s a simple, easier-to-make alternative to ice cream. Depending on the recipe, it can be soft and chewy or hard and crunchy. Panna cotta, which is the Italian phrase for “cooked cream,” is a sweet, delicate custard that may be aromatized with coffee, vanilla, nuts or other flavorings, and it pairs perfectly with summer fruits.
If you prefer more savory desserts, cannoli are Sicilian pastry desserts. The fried, tube-shaped shells of pastry dough are filled with a sweet, creamy filling (which usually includes ricotta cheese). And biscotti (which means “twice-cooked”) are dry, crunchy, almond biscuits originating from the Italian city of Prato and best when coated in melted dark chocolate or dipped in a drink.
At Sipipa, we serve two classic Italian desserts: Italian Cream Cake and Tiramisu. But like beloved children, we simply can’t pick a favorite. They are wonderfully different but equally delicious.
Italian Cream Cake
Traditionally, this classic, beautiful, layered cake is served for birthdays, anniversaries or other special occasions. But we could eat it every single day! It’s creamy, spongy and sweet. It includes whipping cream, nuts and shaved coconut.
Although this scrumptious dessert has Italian in its name, it has become a true Southern favorite in the U.S. Perhaps it’s because it includes pecans. Maybe it’s because it’s so moist and rich. Regardless, it’s a year-round favorite indulgence
In Italian, tiramisu means “lift me up” and it will definitely cheer you up as it melts in your mouth. It’s a traditional, decadent, coffee-flavored dessert made with ladyfinger cookies, amaretto whipping cream, chocolate and cinnamon powder. It was first created in the 1960s, but its origins are often disputed among Italian regions of Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Piedmont, and it wasn’t mentioned in a printed cookbook until the early 1980s.
Traditional tiramisu is usually eaten cold and contains finger biscuits, egg yolks, sugar, coffee, mascarpone cheese and cocoa powder. The original shape of the cake was round, but because of the shape of the biscuits, many now use a rectangular or square pan.
